Explore ‘The Enchanted Bookshop’ at Maine South
Join the Maine South fine arts department as they present their winter play, “The Enchanted Bookshop,” on Feb. 6-8.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday in the Maine South auditorium, 1111 S. Dee Road in Park Ridge.
Tickets are $12, $10 for students, and are available at the door (cash or check only).
Directed by Nico Mungolo, this production features a cast of your favorite storybook “Characters.”
“The Enchanted Bookshop” is about a used bookstore named A Likely Story, that looks like any other shop during the day, but becomes a place where magic happens when night falls. This is when the characters inside the books come alive. Six of those characters — Dorothy Gale, Robin Hood, Pollyanna, Sherlock Holmes, Heidi and Tom Sawyer — long to help the owner, Margie, save her struggling store. However, they are not allowed to leave the building or be seen by human eyes otherwise they will disappear.
When a pair of smugglers come looking for a stolen necklace hidden inside one of the books, the characters are torn. Should they warn Margie and risk disappearing forever? Or can they find a way to defeat the crooks without being seen? This charming comedy celebrates the joy of reading in a fun-filled way.
“Our students are excited to bring this play to Maine South and the Park Ridge Public Library,” said Maine South Fine Arts Department Chair Dr. Teralyn Keith. “It’s a magical play that represents the adventures we experience whenever we open a book. Patrons will see fairy tale characters come to life!”
The play features additional appearances by beloved literary characters including the Queen of Hearts, Long John Silver and Doctor Dolittle.
Those who arrive at least 15 minutes before showtime can experience a magical storytime where these characters read to you in the audience.
In addition, community members may also see this performance at the Park Ridge Public Library at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Tickets are not required for this specific performance and all are welcome.
