Police: Wrong-way driver causes three-vehicle crash in Gurnee
Gurnee police say charges are pending against a Wisconsin woman involved in a three-vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday when they say she drove the wrong way on an on-ramp to Route 41.
Police at 5:22 a.m. responded to a crash near Washington Street and Frontage Road after receiving an automated crash notification from a vehicle’s crash detection service.
A Land Rover driven by a 22-year old woman from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Frontage Road, which also serves as an on ramp for Route 41 from Washington Street, according to police.
Police said the Land Rover had been stolen Wednesday evening in Wisconsin.
As the Land Rover continued south, two vehicles turned north onto the Route 41 on-ramp. The Land Rover crashed head-on with a Cadillac, which then was rear-ended by a Toyota, police said.
The 58-year-old man driving the Cadillac, his two male passengers, ages 30 and 49, and the driver of the Toyota, a 29-year-old man, all of Waukegan, were uninjured, police said.
The driver of the Land Rover tried to flee on foot, according to police, but moments later walked backed toward the crash scene. She then refused to comply with officers’ commands and resisted when they tried to detain her, officials said.
Officers were required to use force to take her into custody, police said, but the woman was not injured. An officer sustained a minor injury but wasn’t taken to a hospital.
The driver of the Land Rover, who has not been identified, was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan for evaluation.
