Fire leaves South Elgin home uninhabitable
A home in South Elgin was left uninhabitable Wednesday morning after a fire officials believe may have been sparked by a mini-fridge.
The South Elgin and Countryside Fire District responded just before noon and discovered a fire in a second-floor bedroom, according to a news release from the district.
With the help of nearby fire departments, crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The cause is still under investigation, but officials said they believe it was sparked by a mini-fridge.
One person was home at the time of the fire, and they evacuated safely; no injuries were reported. The fire caused roughly $250,000 in damage and left the home uninhabitable due to extensive fire and smoke damage.
