Basketball roundup: Richmond’s buzzer-beater lifts Stevenson over upset-minded Mundelein; Rolling Meadows stays perfect in MSL
Atticus Richmond had just two points until the final moment Tuesday in Mundelein.
Richmond found a way to double his scoring output when his putback at the buzzer gave Stevenson a 45-43 win over the Mustangs.
The victory kept Stevenson (15-8, 6-2) a game behind Waukegan in the North Suburban Conference. The two teams meet Friday in Lincolnshire.
Rocco Pagliocca led the Patriots with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Aidan Bardic had 12 points while Liam Curtin chipped in with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Ryan Salvador led Mundelein (8-15, 2-6) with 22 points.
Waukegan 68, Warren 65: Warren fell short of North Suburban leader Waukegan (17-5, 7-1). Zach Ausburn led Warren (16-6, 4-4) with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Braylon Walker added 14 points while Jaxson Davis chipped in 11.
Libertyville 47, Lake Zurich 26: Libertyville led 22-17 at the half and pulled away in a big way. Libertyville (11-9, 3-5) outscored Lake Zurich (10-12, 3-5) 17-2 in the third quarter to coast to the victory. Bryce Wegrzyn led the Wildcats with 17 points while Jonathan Adjei had 12 points and Liam Hanson added 7 points. Lake Zurich was led by Connor Straus who scored 11 points.
Rolling Meadows 70, Prospect 35: The Mustangs (20-3, 7-0) got off to a fantastic start, racing to a 22-3 lead and led wire-to-wire to remain unbeaten in the MSL East. Gavin Escobedo had 17 points, Patrick Coen 10 points, Jack Duffer 9 and Ian Miletic and Ryan Meyer each had 8 points for the Mustangs. Ben Schneider led Prospect (10-13, 4-3) with 11 points.
Hersey 52, Buffalo Grove 28: Hersey bolted to a 31-13 halftime advantage and never looked back as the Huskies (17-4, 5-2) stayed in contention in the MSL East. Brody Variano led Hersey with 14 points while Charlie Pomis had 10 points, Tristan Trotter 7 points and Jackson Hupp 6 points and 12 rebounds. Edwin Karnauchovas led Buffalo Grove (8-16, 3-4) with 6 points.
Wheeling 79, Elk Grove 58: Brent Collar and Zach Neukrich had huge nights for the Wildcats (9-15. 2-5). Collar popped in 28 points while Neukrich drilled in 26 points for Wheeling, who also got 16 points from Jesus 'Chuy' Zavala. Elk Grove (3-20, 0-7) was led by Khaleel Khan and Matt Novak, who each had 18 points.
Barrington 63, Conant 53: Chris Tacher poured in 21 points while Jackson Roberts had 11 points and Oliver Gray 10 points as the Broncos (13-6, 5-2) remained a game behind Fremd in the MSL West. Rohan Patel led Conant (11-10, 3-4) with 18 points while Bradley Biedke added 9 points.
Hoffman Estates 54, Palatine 46: Hoffman outlasted the Pirates to pick up the win. Alwyn Asuncion led the Hawks (17-7, 2-5) with 17 points. Trey Baskin added 14 points and 13 rebounds, Nate Cleveland had 8 points and 8 rebounds, Chris Mobely 8 points and Joey Hernandez 7 points. Tony Balanganayi led Palatine (13-11, 3-4) with 12 points while Carter Monroe had 11 and Darren Dick 10.
Grayslake Central 45, Grayslake North 42: Grayslake Central knocked off its crosstown rival and remained all alone atop the Northern Lake County Conference. Aayan Siddiqui led the Rams with 11 points, Cole Halverson had 10 points, Eric Brom 8 points and 4 assists while Chris James had 8 points and 3 rebounds. Grayslake North (13-10, 5-3) was led by Brady Ballentine and Uros Mitrovic, who each had 14 points, while Jayden Hunt added 10 points.
Wauconda 55, Lakes 38: Wauconda (6-17, 3-5) picked up a solid win while Lakes fell to 6-14, 3-5. Alex Ortega led Wauconda with 14 points. Austn Carslen had 9 points and Carson Elia 8 points. Dorian Pullen led Lakes with 12 points.
Antioch 53, North Chicago 44: Antioch (9-11, 6-2) stayed in the race in the NLC by holding off the Warhawks. Teddi Wetu led all scorers with 20 points. Antioch improved to 6-0 at home.
St. Viator 69, Latin 26: The Lions (17-6) mauled the Romans as Henry Marshall had 15 points, Frankie Greenberg and Landon Ray 9 points each, Ale Andino 8 points while Dawson Charles, Sean Halpin and Isaiah McKenny each had 6 points.
Notre Dame 59, Maine East 42: Notre Dame (13-9) pulled away from a 23-23 halftime tie to beat Maine East (6-16).
Grant 68, Round Lake 41: Grant (13-7, 6-2) remained in contention in the NLCC as Charles Schlicht, Damarrion Smith, Braylon Gray and Cameron Houghton each scored in double figures. Round Lake fell to 0-18, 0-8.
