Trust your intuition

“Give me discernment that I may understand your statutes.”

Psalm 119:25 (NIV)

I held the phone in my hand and dialed one more time. I was trying to place what should have been a simple call to my health insurance company with questions about a medication payment.

This call would be the fourth one I made. I felt kind of strange calling so many times about this issue; but each time I called, I was feeling like I was not given the correct information. To make matters worse, with each call I was told something different. Listening to my gut, or what I would call my intuition, I decided to make a call one more time.

This time I finally connected with someone on the other end who was empathetic to my plea. She told me she noticed I called about this issue several times before. She then connected me to her manager, who connected me to another manger. After speaking with her, I finally felt settled inside. I was glad I followed my intuition, and it proved that I was right.

Our intuition is like that sixth sense — you just know something or someone is or isn’t right. The definition in Psychology Today says it is “the ability to understand something instinctively, without any reason or explanation.”

I like to refer to it as our “God tuition.” It’s the Spirit speaking to us in that inner place, helping us make the right decision. The Bible refers to it as “discernment.”

We all have it. The Bible teaches that wisdom comes from God, and helps us to make choices that align with his will. In biblical times, men and women knew the importance of discerning intuition. When called to fight Goliath, David knew he couldn't do it with the armor of a soldier. He asked permission to use his sling shot and five stones that had given him victory over lions and bears, and successfully slew the giant (1 Samuel 17).

Queen Esther knew she needed favor with the king to keep her and her people from being destroyed. Although going before the king could cost her own life, she had the discernment to fast and pray before going to the king, and won her battle (Esther 4:16).

The Apostle Paul discerned the need to send letters to the churches to equip them to grow in the Christian faith (Ephesians 4:12). And these letters are still teaching us today.

Our intuition can help us discern the right career, know when and where to move, even lead us to our soulmate. I often pray and ask God to give me more discernment. It’s our best friend when it comes to making accurate decisions.
