World-class city’s sports fans deserve better

Chicago is home to 15 Fortune 500 companies. That’s the third most in the nation.

The city’s architecture — no exaggeration — ranks among the best and most prestigious in the world.

The same is true of our music, arts and theater endeavors. Northwestern Medicine and Northwestern University and Rush Hospital and Lurie Children’s Hospital rank in the top echelons of their field. Our museums and restaurants and yes, pizza are world renowned.

Yet for better or worse, professional sports carry a city’s image that in the minds of many supersedes all of the aforementioned factors. Many of our professional sports teams’ owners seem content to rake in millions of dollars yet drag their teams’ images through the mud. It’s sad for many and humiliating for others.

Fans deserve better. Hello, McCaskey family. Hello, Jerry Reinsdorf. Hello, Wirtz family. Hello, Rickets family. We fans believe you can do better. Let’s get to work.
