Basketball roundup: Antioch’s Kavich stuns Geneva with game-winning 3 at buzzer; Stevenson wins twice

Antioch showed playing shorthanded was not an issue.

Zach Kavich, making his first start because Antioch was without starters Teddi Wetu (illness) and Marshall Gehke (injury), buried a three-pointer at the buzzer as host Antioch stunned Geneva, 43-42.

It was Kavich’s only basket of the game.

Jason Lee and Cooper Marabella led Antioch (7-9) with 9 points each. Geneva fell to 16-3.

Mt. Carmel 67, Rolling Meadows 52: Mt. Carmel got off to a fast start and Rolling Meadows could never catch up Saturday at the Clash of Titans at Glenbrook South in Glenview. Mt. Carmel (17-3) jumped out to a 20-11 first-quarter lead. Lazar Lazarevic had 13 points, Ian Miletic 11 and Jack Duffer 9 points for Meadows (17-3).

Warren 73, Libertyville 47: Warren (12-5, 4-2) turned things around after their last second NSC loss earlier this week to Lake Zurich. Warren was led by Jaxson Davis who had 17 points. Braylon Walker and Jack Wolf each chipped in 13 points while Owen Squires added 10 points. Libertyville fell to 10-7, 2-4.

Lake Zurich 54, Palatine 40: Lake Zurich (10-9) posted another strong performance as Adrain Riep led the way with 18 points. Tyler Olson added 16 points and Connor Strauss chipped in 12 points. Palatine (11-9) was led by Tony Balanganayi with 16 points while Brady May had 12 points.

Stevenson 60, Metea Valley 55: The Patriots picked up an early day win at the Wheaton South MLK tournament. Aidan Bardic‘s led the way with 17 points, Liam Curtin had 11 points and 9 rebounds, Rocco Pagliocca 10 points, Donnie Williams 8 points and 4 assists and Atticus Richmond 7 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

Stevenson 53, Wheaton Warrenville South 45: The Patriots (12-7) followed with a second win as Ragliocca had 16, Curtin 12 and Williams 10.

Conant 53, Fenton 42: Conant (11-9) used a 20-3 blitz in the first quarter and coasted home for the win. Bradley Biedke led Conant with 17 points. Ritvik Kolluri had 9 points on a trio of threes, while Gabriel Kipta and Jakub Glowacki each had 6 points.

Schaumburg 74, Von Steuben 50: Schaumburg (15-7) bounced back in a big way from Friday’s loss to Barrington. Jordan Tunis led the way with 15 points, Cam Anderson tossed in 12 points, Zion Young 10 and Aidan Patterson 9 points.

Deerfield 64, Mundelein 43: Deerfield (14-5) was led by Jacob Pollack’s 25 points and advanced to the title game of the Lakes MLK tournament Monday where they will meet Fremd. Mundelein (7-12) was paced by Evan Salvador’s 25 points.

Maine South 70, Northtown 31: Maine South (7-10) broke a three-game losing streak by rolling in Park Ridge. AJ Liss led the Hawks with 12 points.

Maine West 50, Grayslake North 44: Maine West (9-10) picked up the win in Des Plaines over Grayslake North (11-9).

Girls

Antioch 52, Grayslake North 39: Leading 20-18 at the half, Antioch turned up its defense in the third quarter as the Sequoits (8-9, 6-2) pulled away for the win. Heidi Rathman led Antioch with 12 points while Heaven Nix and Scarlett Carrol each had 10 points. Grayslake North (3-14, 1-5 ) was led by Lucy Roscoe, who scored 15 points, Ashely Stoneham’s 9 and Jane Pitchard’s 8 points.

St. Viator 70, Northside Prep 36: The Lions bolted to a 37-18 halftime lead and cruised for the victory. Bella Gounaris had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and two assists. Ava Garcia added 10 points and 11 rebounds while Maggie Ratzki had 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Maine East (9-13) lost a pair of games at the Round Lake MLK tournament. Maine East dropped their first game to Lake Forest Academy 69-48 and then dropped a game to Woodstock 35-19. Arabella Silva scored 31 against LFA and reached 1,000 points as a sophomore. Jessica Bravo chipped in with 9 points. Bella had 13 against Woodstock, with other contributors Maria Gonzalez (6) and Shalini Patel (5).

Libertyville 47, Warren 32: Sophia Cesnovar scored a career-high 17 points. The Wildcats (17-4, 9-0 NSC) played without Lily Fisher, Sophia Swanson and Elle Knight. Sophia Cesnovar stepped up with some much needed timely shooting, and Charlotte Harrison made key free throws down the stretch off the bench, according to Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen.
