Boys basketball: Barrington blitzes Schaumburg behind Gray’s 25

Barrington has been searching for the right lineup. And it looks the Broncos have it dialed in.

Barrington used nine different players in their rotation Friday night. All had a huge part as the Broncos rambled past Schaumburg 57-40.

The win keeps Barrington (10-6, 3-2) a game behind Fremd in the MSL West race. Fremd stayed atop the conference with their 78-51 win over Hoffman Estates.

“We felt a lot of guys stepped up when their number was called and they contributed,” Barrington coach Bryan Tucker said. “Obviously, division games are important. It is like every night in this league, who is staring you in the face.”

Schaumburg (14-7, 2-4) came out with some early energy as the Saxons bolted to a 7-3 lead.

That’s when Oliver Gray heated up. The junior, who would score 25 points, helped spark a 12-2 run in the final five minutes of the first quarter as Barrington roared to a 15-9 lead.

“We just tried to be patient on offense,” said Gray, who is drawing interest from schools in the Ivy League, MAC and Big Ten conferences.

“They didn’t really want to play defense for a long amount of time and we just got some easy shots. We were just ready.”

Gray then got some help from Jackson Roberts. The sophomore, who got moved up to the varsity at Christmas after a shoulder injury sidelined Nick Piepert early in the year, has been providing a much-needed spark.

Roberts did that again Friday, as his speed on the court caught Schaumburg off guard. He made a spinning layup midway through the quarter and then ended the half with a three from the corner as Barrington took a 29-17 lead at the break.

“It has been really good playing on the varsity,” said Roberts, who finished with 10 points. “I really enjoy playing with everybody. Be able to come off the bench and being able to help the team has been great. I have been able to give the starters a break.”

Tucker loved the way his team moved the ball around.

“We feel that the ball has been sticking a little bit in the offense and getting it moving,” Tucker said. “We are moving off of that. And the kids are getting more comfortable and better understanding. When they share the ball they are fun to watch.”

Tucker said he was also impressed with his team’s patience on offense.

“Our patience was the key,” Tucker said. “When they tried to claw their way back in , we got some real long possessions and got some great looks. That is all you can really ask for. Every coach wants that.”

Barrington’s defense, coupled with Schaumburg’s poor shooting, were the main factors as the Broncos blew the game open in the third quarter.

Led by Gray with help from Ian Tepas (5 points), Chris Tacher (3 points) and Adam Baird (7 points), the Broncos opened the period on a 14-2 run to lead 41-19 with 2:35 left. Schaumburg shot just 1-of-11 during that span, going 0-for-9 from outside the arc.

The Saxons stayed ice cold into the fourth quarter, converting just one of their first 16 shots of the half. Barrington poured it on with Gray drilling his fourth 3-pointer of the game as the lead bulged at 47-23.

“It was all about foul trouble for us and not making shots,” Schaumburg coach Jason Tucker said. “It was disappointing tonight. You can’t beat Palatine and then come in and have a performance like this.”

Zion Young led Schaumburg with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Javonte McCoy added 8 points, all of which came in the fourth quarter.
