Basketball roundup: Balanced Hersey knocks off Barrington; NSC girls race stays tight

Fourteen was the number for Hersey Tuesday night.

Charlie Pomis and Brody Variano each scored 14 points to lead Hersey to its 14th victory over host Barrington 57-50 to highlight crossover night in the Mid-Suburban League. Logan Luxem added 12 points while Jackson Hupp netted 8 points for the Huskies (14-3).

Barrington (9-6) was led by Oliver Gray’s 20 points.

Rolling Meadows 68, Conant 46: Jack Duffer knocked down a quartet of 3-pointers to finish with 22 points to lead Rolling Meadows (16-2). Ian Miletic added 15 points as 11 different players scored for the Mustangs. Conant (10-8) was led by Nate Hahn’s 17 points and Bradley Biedke’s 11 points.

Fremd 62, Elk Grove 25: Fremd (15-2) bounced back from Friday’s loss to Barrington in a big way. The Vikings were led by Samuel Hirsch, who scored 21 points, while Ryan Brown had 12 points and Ricardo Requena Zambrano had 10 points.

Schaumburg 70, Buffalo Grove 46: Schaumburg (14-6) picked up the victory behind Cam Anderson’s 21 points and Jordan Tunis’ 20 points. Ray Black added 9 points for the Saxons. Buffalo Grove (7-11) was led by Alex Sirbu who had 16 points and 12 rebounds along with Edwin Karnauchovas, who scored 14 points.

Hoffman Estates 56, Prospect 51: Hoffman Estates (14-5) picked up the win behind Daiquan Daniels 18 points and 7 rebounds. Torey Baskin added 14 points while Nate Cleveland added 8 points and 7 rebounds along with Christopher Mobley’s 7 points and 4 steals. Prospect fell to 7-9.

Palatine 59, Wheeling 38: Tony Balanganayi and Carter Monroe each scored 14 points for Palatine (10-8) while Andy Iliopoulos had 9 points and Darrin Dick and Kasey May each chipped in 8 points. Wheeling (8-11) was led by Bent Collar, who had 13 points, while Nathaniel Rouse Jr. and Kye Parker Peterson each had 8 points.

Vernon Hills 66, Maine West 53: Vernon Hills (11-8, 3-2) limited Maine West (7-10, 1-4) to just three points in the second quarter and pulled away. Tyler Perritt led Vernon Hills with 16 points, Anthony Morgan Jr. chipped in 15 and Daniel Odhiambo had 10. Cavion Tate had 16 points, Baker Blevins 13 and Frankie Ferraiolo 10 points for the Warriors.

St. Viator 59, Niles West 41: The Lions (11-5) won their sixth in a row behind Brandyn Michaels’ 25 points, Dawson Charles’ 12 points and Henry Marshall’s 9 points.

South Beloit 72, Schaumburg Christian 51: South Beloit (11-3, 6-0) opened up an early lead and rolled into sole possession of first place in the Northeastern Athletic Conference. Schaumburg Christian (12-8, 7-1) was led by Tanish Dundi, who scored 15 points.

Waukegan 56, Mundelein 48: Mundelein (7-10, 1-3) led 30-25 at the half but fell to North Suburban Conference co-leader Waukegan (13-4, 3-1). Evan Salvador led the Mustangs with 20 points while Laquan Thomas added 17.

Girls

It was a big night for North Suburban Conference girls hoops as the top three teams, Libertyville, Stevenson and Lake Zurich all posted impressive wins.

Libertyville 57, Lake Forest 28: Libertyville (16-4, 8-0) remained alone atop the NSC. Sophia Swanson scored 12 points, Elinor Lindal 10, Lily Fisher 9 and Madison Sears 7 as 10 different players scored.

Before the game, Libertyville celebrated its 1,000th win in girls basketball. The Wildcats, which became the 13th program in IHSA history to achieve that feat, accomplished it on January third with their win over Yorkville.

Stevenson 70, Zion-Benton 11: Stevenson (12-7, 6-1) stayed one game back of Libertyville in the North Suburban.

Lake Zurich 52, Warren 19: Lake Zurich (13-6, 6-2) stayed in the hunt in the North Suburban by bolting to a 33-5 halftime lead. Avery Cooper led the Bears with 12 points, Molly Friesen had 10, Alex Novak-Tice 9 and Leah Gilbertson 8. Warren (3-17, 1-7) was led by Anjelica Amezquita who had 7 points.

Prospect 61, Evanston 33: Prospect (16-4) made their travel to Evanston a successful one with a convincing victory.

Rolling Meadows 67, Larkin 30: The Mustangs ran away thanks to Abby Ramel’s 13 points and four rebounds, Lizzy Andian’s 10 points and two assists, Clair Cox with 9 points, 5 rebounds and three assists and Maggie Schoessling’s 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Lake Park 37, Elk Grove 26: Elk Grove (3-19) trailed 24-19 at the half, but a poor third quarter did them in. Zariela Myle led the Grenadiers with 10 points.
