Our Saviour’s to host ‘Love, Justice & Joy’ event on MLK Jr. Day

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Naperville welcomes all to “Love, Justice & Joy: Stories and Serving in Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” on Monday, Jan. 20.

The community is invited to participate in the family-friendly special event, which will take place at 9 a.m. at the church’s campus at 815 S. Washington St. in Naperville (next to Edward Hospital).

Attendees will gather in the sanctuary for a time of prayer and music honoring Rev. King’s call to justice and joy before moving to the church’s fellowship center at 9:30 a.m. to make cards and picture frames for local homebound seniors, nursing-home residents and children in foster care. Additionally, “kindness rocks” will be available for painting and sharing.

Prayer-walk guides will be available for those who would like to take a mindful prayer walk in their neighborhood after the event.

“This is an opportunity to come together to love our community and spread joy,” said Our Saviour’s Associate Pastor Elisabeth Pynn Himmelman. “Our Saviour’s mission is to ‘Know Jesus and Make Jesus Known,’ and we do this by sharing God’s love and serving our neighbors.”

In a sermon given in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1956, Rev. King said he “still believed that love is the most durable power in the world,” Pynn Himmelman noted.

The “Love, Justice & Joy” event, she said, is about embracing all of the ways in which love can transform lives and communities.

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Naperville, a member of the Chicago-based Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and an inclusive, affirming Reconciling in Christ church, offers both traditional and contemporary worship services each weekend at its two campuses in central Naperville.
