Mt. Prospect library kicks off year with ‘Giant Book Sale’

Shop four rooms of books, DVDs, CDs, vintage vinyl records, games, puzzles and more for all ages at bargain prices at the first Friends of the Mt. Prospect Public Library book sale of the new year on Jan. 18-19.

The sale will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the library, 10 S. Emerson St., Mt. Prospect. Admission and parking are free.

“Due to numerous large donations the past few months from our generous community, the selection for our first quarterly book sale of the year is fabulous!,” said Pat Klawitter, Friends of the Mount Prospect Public Library president. “We not only have hundreds of amazing hardcover books in the better book room upstairs in Meeting Room A, but also downstairs in the Friends’ room for reduced prices-on all topics including cooking, gardening, military, travel, sports, novels, classics, sewing, biographies, business, religion. All old and new.

“This sale also features a massive collection of newly donated paperback books for a quarter each. These include top authors, murder mysteries, bios, sci-fi and more available upstairs in the smaller meeting rooms,” Klawitter continued. “There will also be surprises and ‘cool stuff’ for sale throughout the book sale rooms. I’m sure everyone will find what they are looking for or something entirely new like the secrets of the spy world, a featured donated book.”

The special “Goldmine” section also features ‘Eric’s Picks,’ a selection of books and items curated by longtime Friends volunteer, vice president of the Friends board, and avid reader Eric Bertolozzi.

“I try to find interesting, unusual and off the beaten path material,” Bertolozzi said. “The ’Projects You Can Make with Cat Hair’ book is a great example. That book sold right away.”

Eric’s picks tend to go fast, Klawitter added.

The sale also features large children’s and teen sections. The better books run anywhere from $2 to $10 with rare/autographed books priced a bit higher. Credit cards are accepted, and knowledgeable Friends volunteers will be available to help shoppers find what they are looking for or something new.

“Surprisingly, for each of our quarterly book sales we receive valuable books, many worth over $100, which we put in the ‘Goldmine’ section at reduced prices. When checking the value of these books we find there are very few of them available today,” Klawitter said. “So, you never know what you will find. It truly is an adventure for all ages.”

All proceeds from the book sales go back to the community supporting library programs, patron services, and staff initiatives.

“So come to the sale, grab some great new books — perhaps a mystery, or travel book to take you to your next vacation, or book on finance to sharpen your investing skills, or a book on the Beatles — to enjoy with a cozy blanket and a hot tea this winter,” Klawitter said.
