Holocaust survivor to speak at Fremont Public Library in Mundelein

Holocaust survivor Steen Metz will talk about his experiences during World War II at the Fremont Public Library in Mundelein on Monday, Jan. 13.

Metz was 8 when he and his family were sent to the Theresienstadt ghetto in German-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1943. It served as a transit camp for Jews being sent to concentration camps, forced-labor camps and killing centers, as well as a labor camp.

More than 155,000 Jews passed through Theresienstadt until it was liberated in May 1945, according to Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. Of those people, 35,440 died in the ghetto and 88,000 were deported to be murdered.

The program is set for 7 p.m. in the events room on the second floor of the library, 1170 N. Midlothian Road.

Registration is required and can be completed online at fremontlibrary.org/events.
