Wheeling 911 calls now to be handled by Northwest Central Dispatch
Starting Thursday, Jan. 9, all 911 calls for police or fire service in Wheeling will be fielded by the Northwest Central Dispatch System.
Fire-related calls had been handled by the Northbrook-based Regional Emergency Dispatch Center. The Wheeling Police Department has had its own dispatch center.
The village board voted in 2023 to shift emergency communication services to Arlington Heights-based Northwest Central. The change will eliminate call transfers, reduce response times and lead to better coordinated responses from the police and fire departments, officials said in a news release.
It also will save Wheeling nearly $400,000 annually, officials said.
