Maine South publication earns two honor distinctions
Maine South High School’s Southwords newspaper recently earned two honor distinctions from two different press associations. Southwords is a student-run publication designed as a public forum for student opinion and balanced reporting on topics relevant to the Maine South High School community.
In its most recent newspaper critique, the National Scholastic Press Association awarded Southwords its highest honor rating, the prestigious All-American award. In addition to scoring the points required for a First Class rating, the publication also earned four marks of distinction in the areas of Coverage, Content, Visuals and Presentation. The judges noted that Southwords’ issues were “full of so much relevant, important and entertaining information,” and that it was “clear that Southwords is doing a true service to the community.”
Additionally, the Kettle Moraine Press Association, awarded Southwords the honor rating of “All-Kempa,” as part of its 2024 KEMPA Critique. This is the highest honor rating given to newspapers that are submitted for critique. The judge noted that Southwords “truly understands the heartbeat of the school community,” and that the Southwords journalists “leveled up from last year, which was already stellar journalism.”
“This recognition from judges across the country reflects Maine South’s student journalists’ drive to produce a dynamic, informative and entertaining publication that our community can be proud of,” says Southwords Adviser Alexander Stathakis.
The Southwords staff currently includes Editors-in-Chief Thomas Hurley and Caitlin Vengazo; News Editors Joseph Calderon, Charlotte Chapman and Samara Lefler; Commentary Editors Eliza Goldwasser, Hayden Magad and Emery Yates; Features Editors Quinn Annis, Ava Jurek and Margaret Sheehan; Entertainment Editors Sayde Feeley, Grace Halpert and Josie Hennes; Sports Editors Audrey Becker, Kyra Demeros and Brianna Giustino; and Production Editors Lily Giambarberee and Anatasisa Musyakevich.
