Economic woes
What I remember about the Jimmy Carter years is mortgage rates hovering around 17% and 18%. I drove to seven or eight banks one day and submitted my name for a federally backed mortgage loan at a much lower rate. I was successful in the lottery-type drawing and received a mortgage rate of 13%, and I was overjoyed. Over the following years, I was able to refinance to lower rates as the economy got better. I will never forget the 13% and being happy to have gotten it.
