Des Plaines resident scammed out of cryptocurrency investment, police say
A Des Plaines resident lost a cryptocurrency investment worth about $5,000 to a scammer, police said Monday.
The theft was reported Jan. 4.
The 76-year-old victim told police he was contacted over the phone in November by someone who said his cryptocurrency wallet, which holds the virtual keys needed for transactions, had been stolen and that he needed to transfer his currency to a different account number.
The victim did so and eventually realized he had been scammed, police said.
