Explore Lake County’s transportation history at virtual symposium

The 10th annual Lake County History Symposium takes place virtually on Zoom from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 9 and 16.

“Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Lake County Transportation” is this year’s theme.

The symposium will feature presentations from historians including seasoned professionals, authors and passionate hobbyists. The event unites people with a shared passion for delving into the rich tapestry of Lake County history.

Dive into a variety of topics, including the history of Naval aviation at Naval Station Great Lakes, the sinking of the Lady Elgin 165 years ago in which more than 300 people died, and preparations for the 1926 Eucharistic Congress in Mundelein, which drew more than 200,000 attendees.

“This event invites us to uncover the hidden and unexpected stories within our communities,” museum educator Sarah Salto said in a news release. “We’ll hear from history enthusiasts who bring to life the remarkable individuals and organizations that have worked to shape and improve Lake County.”

The first evening features four presentations. The second evening has three presentations. Register for both days to experience all seven presentations.

Discussion will open at the end of the presentations for participants to ask questions. All ages are welcome.

Tickets are free, but registration is required for each day you would like to attend.

The event is sponsored by USG.
