Batavia names new police chief

Batavia’s new police chief is being chosen from within the department.

Eric Blowers, deputy chief of operations, will be sworn in Monday to the top post.

The appointment takes effect Jan. 14, following the retirement of Chief Shawn Mazza, after 26 years with the city.

Blowers has worked for Batavia police for 17 years. He began as a patrol officer in 2007, and has been a detective, a patrol sergeant, a watch commander and detective watch commander.

“I am privileged to work alongside the many dedicated men and women of the Batavia Police Department who serve our citizens with pride and integrity,” Blowers said in a news release. “Their commitment to public safety and passion for helping others make the Batavia Police Department the outstanding organization it is.”
