Geneva considering referendum to borrow $68 million for building work

Geneva voters could be asked in April for permission to borrow $68 million for building a new police station and other work.

Aldermen will discuss the matter at a committee of the whole meeting Monday night.

The $68 million would mainly go toward the police station and replacing Fire Station 2, according to the proposed resolution.

The city council has to decide by Jan. 13 whether to have a referendum April 1.

The discussion is after the 7 p.m. council meeting at City Hall, 22 S. First St.

Officials and consultants have been discussing projects for several months, including surveying residents.

A project page on the city’s website says the fire station, located on Farbo Boulevard west of Randall Road, has problems because it was built using residential standards in the 1990s. Part of the police building is at least 109 years old. It underwent a major renovation and expansion in 2006.

The website lists possible projects including tearing down part of the former Geneva Public Library, which is next door to city hall. The historic portion would be preserved and connected to the city hall.

The police department could move next to where the public works department is on South Street.
