Girls basketball: Johnson nails six 3-pointers, leads St. Charles North to semifinals at Komaromy Classic

It was raining 3-pointers at Dundee-Crown’s 41st annual Komaromy Classic on Friday courtesy of St. Charles North junior guard Sydney Johnson.

Johnson drilled 6-of-11 from beyond the arc to lead the North Stars to a 56-35 quarterfinal win over Fenwick. The North Stars will play Maine South in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The sharpshooter connected on four 3-pointers in the first quarter. The North Stars held a 22-10 advantage after 8 minutes of play.

"Sydney is our primary scorer and impact player," said North coach Mike Tomczak. “She played a little bit last year. When she hits shots like that it opens up things for our bigs."

Johnson, who connected on 2 treys in the third quarter, added 4 assists and 3 steals for the winners (13-2).

"I wasn't hitting my 3-pointers in warmups," said Johnson. “Once I hit my first 3 I felt comfortable for the night. My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball in a good position to score. We work well together as a team. It is a very unselfish team."

Leading 35-17 at intermission, the North Stars scored the first 9 points of the second half to take a 44-17 lead with 3:55 left in the third quarter. Hannah Ganser, who scored 10 points, drilled a trey as the Stars led 50-22 after three quarters.

St. Charles North sophomore Bronwyn How muscled her way to 9 points and snared 9 rebounds. Lelanie Posada added 7 points.

"We have a very unselfish and young team," said Tomczak. “Hannah is the only senior on the team. Our ball press on defense and our traps gives us high energy and makes the other team uncomfortable."

The Friars (8-8) made only 14-of-37 shots for 38% and committed 29 turnovers. They were led by Grace Masterson with 9 points.

"We lost our defensive identity to start the game," said Fenwick coach Lenae Fergerson. “We didn't identify their best shooter. We got off to a slow start because we lacked focus. I like we kept fighting."
