DuPage County and Fox girls basketball roundup: Glenbard South, Downers North advance to Neibch semifinals
Glenbard South 53, West Aurora 45
Senior forward/center Brooklynn Moore led a balanced attack with 19 points as Glenbard South (13-1) extended its winning streak to 11 with Thursday’s 53-45 victory over West Aurora (9-3) in the quarterfinals of the 40th annual Bill Neibch Holiday Tournament at Wheaton North.
Callie Hardtke finished with 10 points, while Rheyanna Ferguson and Jamie Mizwicki each added 9 points for the Raiders, who advance to Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinals against Downers Grove North.
Downers Grove North 33, Palatine 21
The Trojans improved to 11-3 with their 33-21 quarterfinal victory over Palatine at Wheaton North.
Sophomore Campbell Thulin paced Downers Grove North with a game-high 16 points.
St. Charles North 72, Dundee-Crown 15
Sophomore guard Lelanie Posada scored a game-high 18 points, hitting three of her five 3-point attempts, while adding 7 steals and a pair of assists during St. Charles North’s 72-15 victory over Dundee Crown (1-9) in Thursday’s opening round of the 41st annual Dundee-Crown/Komaromy Holiday Classic.
Junior Sydney Johnson added 16 points, including four 3-pointers, while 6-foot-2 sophomore center Bronwyn How had 10 points and 7 rebounds for the North Stars (12-2), who advance to Friday’s 3:30 p.m. quarterfinals against Fenwick (8-7).
Stevenson 59, South Elgin 37
Despite 13 points from Isabelle Fernandez, the Storm (8-6) dropped a 59-37 decision to Stevenson (8-4) in a first-round tourney clash at Dundee-Crown.
Trailing 19-18 following a frenetic first quarter, South Elgin was outscored 17-3 in the second quarter, as the Patriots built a 36-21 halftime advantage.
Addison Tinerella and Lexi Lopez each added 6 points for the Storm.
Nisha Musunuri paced Stevenson with 23 points, including five 3-pointers.
Lake Park 31, Barrington 25, OT
The Lancers (8-4) opened tourney action at Dundee-Crown with a 31-25 overtime triumph over Barrington (4-9) Thursday.
Junior guard Allie Gogola finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals, as Lake Park moves on to Friday’s quarterfinals against Stevenson. Gogola hit all 6 of her free-throw attempts, as the Lancers outscored Barrington 8-2 in the extra session.
New Trier 53, Naperville Central 25
Erin Hackett scored a team-high 9 points for Naperville Central (7-7) during its 53-25 first-round loss to New Trier (5-7) at Dundee-Crown.
Lake Zurich 50, Batavia 42
The Bulldogs’ hopes of reaching the semifinals of the Loyola Academy Tournament ended following their 50-42 quarterfinal loss to Lake Zurich (8-5).
Trailing 42-32, Batavia went on a 5-0 run to trim the deficit to 42-37 before Avery Cooper’s basket helped the Bears finish on an 8-5 surge.
Batavia (9-3) opened the tourney with a 52-29 win over Joliet West on Monday behind Julia Arulandu’s 11 points.
Benet Academy 62, St. Charles East 44
The Redwings (12-1) advanced to Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinals of the Montini Christmas Tournament against Lyons following their 52-44 win over the Saints (10-3).
Senior guard Lindsay Harzich paced Benet Academy with 17 points.
Marist 53, Montini 41
Natalie Gartlan scored 15 points as defending champion Montini lost a 53-41 quarterfinal decision to Marist (13-2) Thursday at the Broncos’ Christmas Tournament.
Sophomore Lily Porter netted 19 points for Marist, which will face Fremd (13-2) in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinals.
Naperville North 65, Burlington Central 44
Natalie Frempong poured in a game-high 32 points as Naperville North (7-6) advanced to Friday’s noon consolation semifinals against Neuqua Valley (5-8) with Thursday’s 65-44 victory over Burlington Central at Montini.
Sophomore Kelsey Covey paced the Rockets (3-9) with 10 points. Burlington faces St. Francis (2-9) at 9 a.m. Friday.
Neuqua Valley 76, St. Francis 62, 2 OT
Junior Nalia Clifford tallied a season-high 36 points during Neuqua Valley’s 76-62 double-overtime win over St. Francis (2-8) in the consolation round at Montini.
Tea Rubino led the Spartans with 19 points.
Hinsdale South 51, Thornton 29
Senior Bridget Hecker scored 19 points as Geneva (4-8) fought off St. Laurence, 47-46, in the consolation round at Montini. The Vikings face Hinsdale South (8-6) at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Sophomore guard Brynn Diedrich tallied 10 points during Hinsdale South’s 51-29 victory over Thornton Thursday afternoon.
