DuPage County and Fox boys basketball roundup: Burlington Central, West Chicago, Neuqua advance in winner’s brackets

Burlington Central 56, Marian Catholic 54

The Rockets (8-3) rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat Marian Catholic 56-54 in Thursday’s first round of the Hinsdale Central Holiday Tournament.

Trailing 34-24 at halftime and 46-39 entering the final quarter, Burlington Central closed the game on a 9-3 run to come back from a 4-point deficit in the final 4:46.

Senior Patrick Shell led the Rockets with 25 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field, while Caden West added 13 points.

Playing at Hinsdale Central for the first time, Burlington advances to Friday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinals against the host Red Devils.

Hinsdale Central 64, Plainfield East 35

Dillon Orozco and Eric Kozys finished with 16 and 11 points, respectively, to lift the tourney host Red Devils (9-2) to a 64-35 first-round victory over Plainfield East.

Hinsdale led 18-8 after 1 quarter before putting the game away with a 23-9 second-quarter surge that helped open a 41-17 halftime advantage.

Brother Rice 67, St. Charles East 44

Jack Weigus scored a game-high 22 points with six 3-pointers as Brother Rice (11-0) remained unbeaten following its 67-44 first-round win over St. Charles East (5-5) at Hinsdale Central.

Brad Monkemeyer paced the Saints with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Sam Tisch had 9 points and 6 boards, and Marco Klebosits added 5 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Saints trailed 16-15 after 1 quarter before being outscored 17-7 in the second period.

Rockford Auburn 69, Wheaton Academy 65

The Warriors (8-2) received double-figure production from Hayden Schroeder (18 points) and Tyler Smith (17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) during their 69-65 loss to Rockford Auburn (8-4) at Hinsdale Central.

Junior guard Amir Danforth scored 42 points for Rockford Auburn.

Metamora 69, Wheaton North 66, 2 OT

Henry Schlickman poured in a game-high 26 points, including four 3-pointers, and teammate Will Channing added 20 points and four 3-pointers during Wheaton North’s 69-66 double-overtime loss to Metamora (10-2) in Thursday’s first round of the 50th annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York.

Trailing 46-43 after 3 quarters, the Falcons (5-5) outscored Metamora 13-10 down the stretch to force overtime, where the 2 teams each tallied 6 points.

Jonah Funk, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career last week, paced Metamora with 23 points.

Glenbrook South 60, Glenbard North 46

Senior guard Jack Schager scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds during Glenbard North’s 60-46 first-round loss to Glenbrook South (8-4) at the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic.

Lamari Carpenter added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Panthers (4-5), who were outscored 22-13 in the fourth quarter.

Anestis Hadjistamoulou finished with 23 points for the Titans.

St. Patrick 73, Glenbard East 60

Danny Snyder scored a team-high 19 points, hitting six 3-pointers, during the Rams’ 73-60 loss to St. Patrick (10-1) in first-round action at York.

Glenbard led 26-22 after 1 quarter and 39-34 at halftime before being outscored 39-21 in the second half.

EJ Breland paced the Shamrocks with 25 points.

Lake Forest 55, Batavia 43

Jax Abalos scored 18 points with four 3-pointers during Batavia’s 55-43 first-round loss to Lake Forest (7-3) at York’s Jack Tosh.

Xavier Justice added 11 points for the Bulldogs (5-5).

West Chicago 47, Lake View 37

The Wildcats evened their record at 6-6 and advanced to Friday’s 6:30 p.m. Elgin Holiday Tournament semifinals with Thursday’s 47-37 win over Lake View (5-5), ending the visitors’ 5-game winning streak.

West Chicago will face Sycamore (9-3) Friday.

Neuqua Valley 59, Dundee-Crown 25

Freshman Cole Kelly recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Neuqua Valley (4-5) to a 59-25 first-round win at DeKalb’s Chuck Dayton Classic.

Whitman Charboneau chipped in with 13 points, while Amos Bynum had 7 for the Chargers (3-6).

In other action at Dekalb, Naperville Central (4-7) dropped a 63-60 decision to Lincoln-Way West (6-4) despite 14 points from TJ Hillman; while Christian Wilson had 22 points in Huntley’s 64-61 loss to Manley.

Geneva 48, Naperville North 43

Gabe Jensen scored 15 points and teammate Ben Peterson added 13 as Geneva (11-1) outlasted Naperville North 48-43 in the consolation semifinals at Jacobs’ Hinkle Holiday Classic.

Jack Zitko tallied 15 point for the Huskies (7-5).

Cary-Grove 59, Jacobs 54

Cary-Grove (9-4) advanced to Friday’s 5th-place game at Jacobs, outscoring the host Golden Eagles 17-10 in the fourth quarter. AJ Berndt and Adam Bauer each scored 13 points for the Trojans, while Ben Jurzak had 22 for Jacobs (7-4).

Metea Valley 61, Normal West 27

Tre Watkins scored 15 points and Dominic Smith added 10 as Metea Valley (8-3) opened the State Farm Classic with a 61-27 victory over Normal West in Bloomington.
