DuPage and Fox Valley girls basketball roundup: Benet, St. Charles East advance into a quarterfinal matchup at Montini
York 61, Naperville North 51
Senior guard Anna Filosa scored a team-high 18 points to help lift York’s girls basketball team to a 61-46 victory over Naperville North during Monday’s opening round of the Montini Christmas Tournament in Lombard.
The win, which helped avenge the Lady Dukes’ 56-48 loss to the Huskies on Dec. 7, raised their record above the .500 level at 6-5. It was York’s third consecutive victory.
Natalie Frempong paced the Huskies (6-6) with a game-high 26 points.
York will face Fremd in Thursday’s 3 p.m. tourney quarterfinals.
Fremd 77, Burlington Central 30
Fremd (12-2) extended its winning streak to 4 with Monday’s 77-30 triumph over Burlington Central in the first round of the Montini Christmas Tournament.
Led by senior guard Ella Todd’s game-high 29 points, the Vikings built a commanding 50-20 halftime advantage.
Sophomore guard Audrey LaFleur tallied a team-high 11 points for the Rockets (3-8).
Marist 64, St. Francis 39
Junior guard Mia Quaranta scored 12 points during the Spartans’ 64-39 loss to Marist at the Montini Christmas Tournament.
Marist improved to 12-2 behind junior point guard Olivia Cosme’s 10 points.
The Spartans (2-8), who dropped their sixth straight game, will face Neuqua Valley in Thursday’s 9 a.m. consolation quarterfinals.
Marist will take on tourney host Montini Thursday afternoon.
Glenbard South 50, DeLaSalle 25
Senior center Brooklynn Moore scored 13 points while 6-foot-1 junior Molly Purse added 10 points during Glenbard South’s 50-25 victory over DeLaSalle in Monday’s first round of the 40th annual Bill Neibch Holiday Tournament at Wheaton North.
While stretching their winning streak to 10, the Raiders earned a 3 p.m. quarterfinal clash against West Aurora on Thursday.
In other first-round action at Wheaton North, West Aurora (9-2) defeated Willowbrook, 62-40; Palatine downed Jacobs 65-14; Downers Grove North (10-3) downed Elgin (5-9), 78-22; Hinsdale Central (8-4) outlasted Elk Grove, 54-16; Glenbrook South defeated Glenbard North, 60-27; Bartlett (3-10) edged Schaumburg, 40-38; and defending tourney champion Waubonsie Valley (11-1), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped by Fremd (59-54) on Dec. 14, defeated the host Falcons (1-9), 54-38.
Benet Academy 76, Hinsdale South 43
The Redwings (11-1) extended their winning streak to 11 with Monday’s 76-43 first-round victory over Hinsdale South (7-5) at the Montini Christmas Tournament.
Benet, which led 47-16 at halftime, advances to Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. quarterfinals against St. Charles East.
St. Charles East 71, Thornton 45
Senior guard/forward Corrine Reed earned Player of the Game honors during the Saints’ 71-45 victory over Thornton in the first round at Montini.
St. Charles East (10-2), which led 31-15 at halftime, outscored the Wildcats 40-30 down the stretch.
Thornton is now 5-5.
