DuPage and Fox Valley boys basketball roundup: Waubonsie Valley, Crystal Lake South advance to Hinkle semifinals
Waubonsie Valley 58, Cary-Grove 41
Senior guard/forward Moses Wilson scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to help lead defending Hinkle Holiday Classic champion Waubonsie Valley to a 58-41 second round triumph over Cary-Grove Monday afternoon.
Illinois State-bound senior guard Tyreek Coleman netted 12 of his 14 points in the first half when the Warriors (10-0) jumped out to a 31-17 halftime advantage.
Senior forward Cade Valek added 9 points for the Warriors, who connected on 17 of their 25 free-throw attempts.
With the win, Waubonsie advances to Thursday’s tourney semifinals against Barrington.
Junior center Adam Bauer paced Cary-Grove (7-5) with 17 points, 15 of which came in the opening half. Junior guard AJ Berndt chipped in with 9 points for the Trojans, who will take on host Jacobs in a consolation round game Thursday.
Crystal Lake South 77, Naperville North 32
Sophomore Carson Trivellini scored 21 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to lift Crystal Lake South (10-2) to a 77-32 quarterfinal victory over Naperville North at the Hinkle Holiday Classic.
With the win, the Gators advance to Thursday’s 6 p.m. semifinals against Grayslake Central (9-2).
Cooper Buelna and Nick Stowasser each added 12 points for the Gators, while senior point guard AJ Demirov chipped in with 8 points, 7 assists, and 5 steals.
Leading 15-11 after 1 quarter, CL South put the game away by outscoring the Huskies, 48-8, in the second and third quarters.
Carson Loughlin and Jake Ryan paced the Huskies (7-4) with 8 points apiece.
Larkin 55, Rockford Boylan 49
Junior guard David McFadden scored a game-high 19 points, including 9 in the third quarter, to help lift the Royals (4-7) to a 55-49 consolation round victory over Rockford Boylan in Monday’s second day of the Jacobs/Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin.
Leading 23-22 at halftime, Larkin outscored the Titans 16-11 in the decisive third quarter and held off a late comeback for the win behind senior Josh Hibbett’s 5 fourth-quarter points. Hibbett finished with 11 points.
Junior guard Mac Irvin also added 11 points for the Royals, who will face Grant at 1:30 p.m. in Thursday’s consolation semifinals.
Sophomore Madden Fuehrer paced Rockford Boylan (3-10) with 14 points.
Prairie Ridge 44, South Elgin 33
The Storm (3-10) dropped its second straight tourney game at the Hinkle Holiday Classic, losing to Prairie Ridge, 44-33, Monday morning.
Juniors Darrion Thurman and Ilija Babic led South Elgin with 9 and 7 points, respectively, while sophomore Aman Chiluka added 6 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Junior guard/forward Elijah Loeding tallied a game-high 21 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter, for the Wolves (4-7).
Prairie Ridge jumped out to a 22-14 halftime lead before the Storm whittled the deficit to 1 at 27-26 after 3 quarters. South Elgin was then outscored 17-7 in the final period.
Grant 60, Bartlett 55
Bartlett (4-9) was unable to overcome a slow start during Monday’s 60-55 consolation round loss to Grant in the Hinkle Holiday Classic Monday afternoon.
Grant (6-6), led by junior Damarrion Smith’s game-high 20 points, built a 17-4 first-quarter lead that stretched to 32-18 at halftime before the Hawks staged a valiant second-half comeback.
Sophomore point guard Joey Cwik scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half for the Hawks, while senior Freddy Palacios added 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
Senior Colin Taylor chipped in with 10 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, for Bartlett, which returns to action against Rockford Boylan Thursday morning.
Elgin Holiday Tournament
West Chicago improved to 4-6 overall with Monday’s 47-37 victory over Schaumburg Christian in Monday’s opening round of the Elgin Holiday Tournament.
The Wildcats used a 14-5 second-quarter surge to grab a 26-17 halftime lead before outscoring Schaumburg Christian 17-13 in the final period.
With the win, the Wildcats advance to Thursday’s 4:45 p.m. quarterfinals against Lake View.
In other first-round Elgin tourney action, Payton College Prep (6-5) defeated Harvest Christian (4-10) 45-30; Sycamore downed Aurora Central Catholic (0-11) 76-41; defending champion Shepard outlasted St. Edward (5-6) 83-62; and host Elgin (2-11) snapped an 11-game losing streak with its 63-60 victory over Marian Central Catholic (3-8), outscoring the Hurricanes 22-18 in the final quarter.
With the win, the Maroons advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against Elmwood Park.
Wheeling Hardwood Classic
Downers Grove North 60, Maine West 24: The Trojans (9-1) made their opener a relatively comfortable one by jumping to 30-12 halftime lead. Nolan Hurter led 13 different Downers Grove North scorers with 11 points. Maine West (5-6) was led by Davion Tate, who had 7 points, and Frankie Ferraiolo, who had 6 points.
