Basketball: Bartlett boys, South Elgin girls record UEC wins

For three quarters, Dimitre Petrasiunas was a nonfactor for Bartlett. He scored 2 points in three quarters on 1-of-3 shooting.

Petrasiunas saved his best for the final quarter. He scored 8 of his 10 points in the final 8 minutes to help lead Bartlett to a 40-36 win over host South Elgin in Upstate Eight Conference action Friday night.

"Dimitre became more authoritative in the fourth quarter," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. “He took it to the basket and got some easy baskets."

Petrasiunas added 10 rebounds.

"Coach wanted me to take the ball to the basket," said Petrasiunas. “They were running double screens for me."

Bartlett, which missed 9 layups, won the game at the defensive end.

The Storm (3-8, 2-2) converted only 8-of-33 shots for 24% and made 4-of-15 from beyond the arc for 26%.

South Elgin didn't make a basket until the 10-second mark of the first quarter when Caden Scholl connected on a 10-foot fadeaway to cut Bartlett's lead to 9-5.

"We missed too many bunnies," said Wolfsmith. "We left 18 points out there on missed layups. Our defensive action was very good."

Petrasiunas' putback with 3:25 left gave Bartlett a 34-26 lead.

South Elgin's Ilija Babic's made 4-of-4 free throws to slice the Hawks’ lead to 34-30 with 2:22 left.

The Storm couldn't get any closer.

Scholl paced the Storm with 10 on a pair of 3-pointers with 7 rebounds.

"We played very hard," said South Elgin coach Ryan Storm. “We played with great effort. It was a great game of physicality. Bartlett plays with great half-court effort. Credit to Bartlett."

Girls game

With four returning starters, South Elgin is hoping to have a solid 2024-2025 season.

The Storm moved to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the Upstate Eight Conference with a convincing 58-28 win over Bartlett in an Upstate Eight game Friday night.

Propelled by four 3-pointers the Storm jumped out to a 16-4 lead and never looked back.

Molly Stahl and Izzy Fernandez connected on two 3-pointers each as South Elgin took control early.

"We pride our ourselves in starting quick," said coach Emily Driessen. “We applied pressure and got turnovers and easy baskets. We have experience this year and that helps."

The Storm shot 8-of-16 from 3-point range for 50%.

"We really shoot the 3 well," said the Storm coach. “Everybody has the green light to shoot it."

Taleah Banner led the Storm with 19 points and 6 rebounds.

"I want to be super aggressive and take the ball to the basket," said Tanner. “I just want to play hard."

Stahl added 15 points with four 3-pointers and Fernandez scored 14 with 3 treys.

Chloe Ohm scored 8 for Bartlett.
