Daily Herald photo contest winners for November 2024

Our top images for the month of November in the Daily Herald’s reader photo contest range from the wonders of the world, like the ancient pyramids in Giza or mountain ranges in New Zealand, to the small scenes of beauty found on a city street.

Soaring to the top is a striking photo by William A. Rosewell of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.” He captures the intricate pattern of limestone blocks that construct the oldest and largest of the three pyramids. The Palatine resident wrote, “As I was standing at the base of the pyramid at midday, the sun was at the top of the pyramid. I took the picture and it looked to me as the pyramid on the back of the U.S. dollar bill.”

The photo of the Earl Mountains reflecting in Mirror Lakes was taken with an iPhone 14 Pro on a recent trip to New Zealand. David and Jill Scarpino of Pingree Grove

This majestic photo of the Earl Mountains and its shimmering reflection on Mirror Lakes in New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park gives David and Jill Scarpino of Pingree Grove the second-place spot. They wrote, “We love the crisp, simple colors and the pristine, clear reflection of the clouds in the lake. New Zealand was beautiful and unspoiled.”

Maggie Frisch and her husband were surprised to find this lovely bunch of daisies growing out of a sidewalk in the river town of Marquette, Iowa, in September. Maggie Frisch of Lake Forest

Maggie Frisch of Lake Forest comes in third with this whimsical photo of daisies blooming through cracks in the concrete. She wrote, “I call this photo ‘Grow Where You’re Planted (Or Where You Plant Yourself!).’”

Joe Trimarco of Glen Ellyn captured a rainy day in Paris, which he likened to an Impressionist painting. Joe Trimarco of Glen Ellyn

Gray skies didn’t dampen Joe Trimarco’s imagination during a bus ride in Paris. He takes fourth place for this photo capturing a bit of the spirit of the famous “Paris Street; Rainy Day” painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Glen Ellyn resident wrote, “I loved the way it looked, almost like an Impressionist painting.”
