The official start of Hanukkah may still be more than a week away, but with magic, games and latkes on the menu, why wait?
Kids and grown-ups got an early start on the celebration Sunday with the Magical Hanukkah Extravaganza celebration at Congregation Kneseth Israel in Elgin.
While Magician Magic Dave of Round Lake Beach performed tricks for an awe-struck audience of youngsters and Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein demonstrated the lighting of a menorah, volunteers like Dick Johnson of the congregation’s men’s club prepared traditional Jewish latkes — a type of potato pancake — in the kitchen.
“We don't get these all the time. It's something you wait for,” Johnson said.
