Dog dies in fire at Elgin homeless encampment

There was a fire Thursday night at the “Tent City” homeless encampment near State and Wing streets in Elgin.

A dog died during the fire that was reported at 11:49 p.m., according to the Elgin Fire Department. No residents or firefighters were hurt.

Fire officials said they believe the cause of the fire, which engulfed three structures, was accidental.

Firefighters extinguished the flames within 30 minutes. Metra trains were halted during the fire.

A bigger fire happened at the encampment on Dec. 4.
