Unwrapping a stress-free holiday season (with kids)

The holiday season, a time of twinkling lights and tinsel, can also feel like a never-ending whirlwind of recitals, festive social obligations and elf-on-the-shelf high jinks. Parents set out to provide a magical time for their families that can just end up in disaster due to stress, managing schedules, expectations and energy levels of excited children. But fear not — here’s some tips for a stress-free holiday season with your kiddos:

Plan ahead and organize the elves: Start by creating a family calendar with all the important dates and events. This will help you keep track of activities and prevent last-minute surprises. Involve your kids in the planning process, allowing them to choose some activities they are excited about.

Keep expectations in check: Talk to your children about your holiday plans and set realistic expectations. It’s important they understand it’s OK if things don’t always go as planned. That’s life! Having a healthy perspective helps keep the jolly spirit intact and reduces the disappointment or stress for everyone.

Prioritize relaxation: Take a moment to breathe and enjoy the magic of the season. A little mindfulness can go a long way in keeping the holiday chaos at bay. Make sure to schedule downtime for the family. This could be a cozy movie night at home or simply enjoying a walk in winter wonderland. Moments of relaxation help recharge everyone’s spirits.

Treasure simple traditions: You don't have to do it all. Focus on a few cherished traditions that really capture the spirit of the season for you and your family. Focus on what truly brings joy — whether it’s baking cookies, seeing a holiday show or reading holiday stories by the tree together. Simple rituals create a sense of attachment and joy that children will cherish for years to come.

Stay flexible: Be prepared to tweak plans as needed. Unpredictable weather, unforeseen events or even just the vibe of the day can lead to changes. Roll with it, embrace spontaneity and be open to new experiences. Savor these precious moments with those who matter most.

Promote generosity: Encourage your children to experience the joy of giving through acts of kindness. Let them choose whether your family will be donating toys to a family in need, volunteering at church or making handmade gifts for the neighbors. The spirit of generosity can add a deeper level of meaning to the holiday season.

Foster connection: Remember, Santa has a powerhouse team in his corner — Mrs. Claus, the elves and the reindeer all championing the holiday! Reach out to friends, family or play groups that provide practical support and encouragement. Concentrate on nurturing connections that fill you with joy and limit contact with the ones that don’t.

Keep healthy: Don’t let your holidays be derailed by a sick household. Keep up with sleep, nutrition and exercise schedules as best you can. And if you must stay inside due to sickness make a plan to keep your mischievous elves occupied with family crafts, games and movies.

By incorporating these tips, you can create a festive atmosphere that celebrates the joy of togetherness, making this holiday season a memorable and stress-free experience for the entire family.
