New DuPage recorder scraps fees for veterans seeking copies of their discharge records
In one of her first moves since being sworn in, new DuPage County Recorder Liz Chaplin has announced that she has eliminated fees for veterans who obtain copies of their military discharge records from the office.
“Our veterans have given so much, and this small gesture is one way we can express our gratitude and ensure they have convenient access to the documentation they need without asking for a fee,” said Chaplin in a statement Wednesday.
Effectively immediately, the county recorder of deeds office will no longer charge veterans for copies of their DD214 military discharge records.
The document is often required to access benefits, services and other resources, according to a news release announcing the change. Veterans and their families can bring a copy to the recorder’s office to ensure a backup copy always is available.
By eliminating copy and retrieval fees, the office aims to make the process easier and more accessible for all veterans, the release said. Veterans also can sign up for “Honor Rewards,” a special retail discount card offered by the recorder’s office.
