Cook girls basketball notes: Fremd’s Thompson sisters showing off their range

They wear No. 5 and 55.

Perhaps Ellie and Greta Thompson should be wearing 3 and 33.

The Fremd girls basketball sisters are two of the best 3-point shooters in the Mid-Suburban League.

Senior Ellie has already committed to Division II Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Junior Greta Thompson has already received a Division I offer.

"I've just always liked No. 5," said Ellie, who connected for three 3s in the Vikings' win over Homewood-Flossmoor last week in the Dave Yates Chicagoland Showcase. "Greta will take that number next year."

Next year Ellie will be in Florida, playing for Rollins, the same school where Jonny Reibel, a two-time all-state basketball player at Hoffman Estates, is a hall of famer.

And it just so happens, Reible is Ellie's personal trainer.

As a senior, Reibel led the Hawks to the Elite Eight and a 30-3 record. He also played overseas professionally after graduating from Rollins.

"He (Riebel) went there (Rollins) and he talked to their staff for me," said Ellie, who is considering a major in business or marketing. "Then I went on a visit and I really loved it down there. It's a lot of pressure off my back by committing."

Emotional weekend: With the brain cancer awareness night at Palatine last Friday and the newly named Dave Yates Chicagoland Showcase at Fremd on Saturday, it was an emotional two days for the Vikings whose late hall of fame coach is always on their minds.

"It's been tough for us," said Fremd first-year coach James Han, the former guard for the only Mid-Suburban League boys basketball state championship team (Schaumburg in 2001). "It's obviously been tough for the family as well. Dave's daughter (Brooklynn), a freshman, plays for the junior varsity team. It's been great, though, to have the positive aspect of bringing awareness (to brain cancer). Trying to find a silver lining to help other people is obviously helpful to deal with the tough emotions of his loss."

Prospect: Prospect (6-2), tied for first in the Mid-Suburban East with Rolling Meadows, is being led by junior Alli Linke. The highly-touted college prospect is averaging 20.9 points per game through seven games along with 12.1 rebounds per game, 2.4 assists per game, 2.4 steals per game, and 2.7 blocks per game. She is shooting 61% from 3 (14-23), 70.6% from the free-throw line (24-34), and 55.7% from the floor.

"She is having an amazing start to the season," said Prospect coach Matt Weber. "She put in a lot of work in the off-season."

Linke, the Knights' captain, is 98 points away from 1,000 in career after her 15-point effort in a 59-55 double overtime win over Libertyville (6-3) at Tuesday's Exam Jamm in Lake Zurich.

Solid start: Rolling Meadows is off to an impressive 7-1 start.

"I've been very impressed with the contributions by everyone on our roster," said Mustangs coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "Everyone is fulfilling their roles, and we've played solid team basketball. We have four new starters this season, and our kids have embraced their opportunities."

First-year starter Abby Ramel is averaging over 20 points a game (including a career-high 28 against Glenbard West at the Dave Yates Chicagoland Showcase.

"Dalia Grandberry has controlled the paint and shown her versatility," Kirkorsky added of the 6-foot-4 junior forward.

On Mark: Hersey sophomore Sadie Marks had black-to-back games with career highs in points with 24 vs Libertyville and 25 vs Grayslake Central in the Buffalo Grove Thanksgiving tournament.

Junior guard Kate Donovan, who was named the 'Player of the Game' when the Huskies defeated Geneva at the Dave Yates Chicagoland Classic, is enjoying a breakout year. She is averaging 13 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game for the 6-3 Huskies.

Silva surging: Maine East sophomore Arabella Silva has scored 147 points through the Blue Demons’ first seven games this season and is 315 points away from 1,000 in her career.

Soph recognized: Wheeling sophomore Ellie Vito was named all-tournament at the Maine East Thanksgiving tournament.

South stability: Returning three-year senior starters Katie Barker, Asia Kobylarczyk and Ally Pape continue to lead the way for Maine South (7-2).

"All three have been a part of many successes over the past two-plus seasons and there is more to come," said Hawks veteran coach Jeff Hamann. "With those three players, we remain extremely balanced in scoring."

Pape and Kobylarczyk are averaging 12.1 points while Barker is 10.3. Barker is also averaging 6 rebounds followed closely by Kobylarczyk (5.9) and Pape (5.7).

"The three of them also lead us in steals, made 3-pointers and free-throw percentage ," Hamann said. "Barker and Pape also lead our team in assists. With all that being said, they would tell you their stats come a distant second to the team's success and to the growth of the younger players on the team. They are special young women."

Awareness night: Buffalo Grove is hosting a Go Lime Green event on Friday when Prospect visits to bring awareness to mental health.

BG won two out of three with wins over Niles West and Wheeling.

Senior forward Demi Antonopoulos had a career high in rebounds with 11 against Wheeling on Friday when sophomore guard Lauren Fink led the way with 10 points.

Freshman center Olivia Hill has stepped up for the Bison in her rookie season and was named as an all-tourney selection at the Bison Classic.

Nice rebound: Palatine bounced back after a tough loss to Fremd on Friday to defeat New Trier on Monday, 50-49.

Elise Martino scored a team-high 19 points while also leading the team in steals to help bring the Pirates back from a 13-point deficit in the second quarter.

Molly Pieper added 14 points while Grace Kline and Halle Onyekonwu added 6 apiece.

"I’m really proud of the girls' resiliency and ability to push through some adversity and then come together and play a complete, team game," said Palatine coach Sarah Davis. "It really speaks volumes to their ability to respond after tough losses."

West's Warrior: Maine West returning all-conference junior, Kaitlyn Nutley, has been solid through the Warriors' first through the first seven games. Nutley averaged 10.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.9 assists.

New spots on the floor: Elk Grove's Emily Fiorito, Danica Little and Katie Wirtz are all playing in positions they have never played before and handling the ball for coach Courtney Lindfors' Grenadiers.

"They have all stepped up this season," Lindfors said.

Fiorito is averaging 10 points while Little scored 18 points against Leyden last week.
