Lanes opening up on York Road as cold weather hits
Drivers can stretch out on York Road in Bensenville with lanes reopening next week.
As construction season comes to a close, the road will revert to two lanes in each direction on Monday, Dec. 16, Illinois tollway officials said Tuesday.
Traffic has been constricted to one lane in each direction between Devon Avenue and Supreme Drive since September.
However, come spring, lane closures will go into effect again. Workers in 2025 will be improving York’s northbound lanes.
The tollway, in partnership with DuPage County, is rebuilding the corridor between Devon and Gateway roads in conjunction with construction of the I-490/Route 390 interchange.
The York Road project also includes drainage improvements and a multiuse path on the west side of the street.
The I-490/Route 390 interchange will cost $534 million. It includes extending Route 390 east to O’Hare International Airport and building I-490, a new toll road on the west side of the airport connecting to I-90 in Des Plaines and I-294 in Franklin Park.
While the tollway is paying to improve York within the interchange, DuPage County is funding work to the north and south.
Construction should wrap up in 2027.
