Palatine Fire Department again keeping the wreath red

The Palatine Fire Department is again participating in the annual Keep the Wreath Red holiday safety program.

The campaign, initiated in the mid-1950s, aims to raise awareness about fire safety during the holiday season. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, each of the department’s five fire stations will display a wreath illuminated entirely with red lights. In the event of a holiday-related fire, a red bulb will be replaced with a white one.

To ensure a safe and joyful holiday season, the department recommends residents: check holiday lights for worn or damaged wiring and replace as needed; do not run lighting or extension cords through windows, doors or across sidewalks; avoid electrical overloads; turn off lights when unattended; use a sturdy tree stand, water your tree frequently and keep it away from heat sources; and place candles in sturdy holders on firm, uncluttered surfaces, and keep them away from blinds, curtains, and other flammable materials.
