Turn away from hate all year long

As the holiday season approaches, our thoughts turn to peace, love, and joy. But these should not be just holiday slogans — these ideas should imbue our community and our treatment of others throughout the year.

The League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle, a nonprofit, nonpartisan community service organization, condemns hateful actions such as the one reported recently at the Downers Grove Panera. A couple wearing Palestine shirts were subjected to expletives and hateful behavior targeting their ethnicity.

The League heartily concurs with the statement of State’s Attorney Robert Berlin that, “Every member of society, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or any other individual characteristic, deserves to be treated with respect and civility. This type of behavior and the accompanying prejudice have no place in a civilized society …”
