Worker charged with stealing $180,000 from Geneva company
The chief financial officer of a Geneva company has been charged with stealing from it.
Troy A. Piper, 60, of the 500 block of Fawn Court in Carol Stream, is charged with felony theft — more than $100,000 but less than $500,000.
According to Geneva police, Piper worked at Slaten Construction in Geneva, starting in December 2021. The firm acts as a general contractor. His duties included paying subcontractors.
The owner of the firm told police that in February 2023, he found a reimbursement check made out to Piper, so they started examining other transactions. Police say there were 25 transfers from the company’s bank account to Piper’s personal bank account, totaling $180,732, between July 2022 and January.
The owner showed police an email from Piper after the owner confronted him about the transfers in 2023. In it, Piper wrote, “I cannot express enough how horribly sorry I am. I cannot believe what I did,” according to police.
Piper has been issued a summons to appear in court on Dec. 19.
