Support the Vernon Township Food Pantry on Giving Tuesday Dec. 3
Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, Dec. 3, and the Vernon Township Food Pantry invites the community to come together to support neighbors facing food insecurity.
Entering the holiday season, the need locally has never been greater, with more than 275 families relying on the food pantry. These numbers represent a 45% increase since January of 2024, and a significant increase compared to the 75 families that utilized the pantry prior to 2020.
Giving Tuesday is an annual observance that began in 2012 and encourages people to think about those in their community who are facing challenges of all kinds. It also emphasizes the importance of donating to, and volunteering for, worthwhile causes.
Through the generosity of donors, the township food pantry can provide vital assistance, distributing an average of 4,500 pounds of food each month. Contributions from the community have a powerful impact: every $1 donated enables the township to purchase $8 to $10 worth of food through a partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
Donations made over the next month will ensure local families have access to nourishing meals during the holiday season, which can be a particularly difficult time for those facing financial challenges.
“The holiday season brings both hope and, for some, tough times,” said Nancy Urice, Vernon Township Food Pantry manager. “With your support, we can meet the growing needs of our community and ensure no family goes hungry during this season of giving.”
The township food pantry offers a client-choice model, allowing its clients to shop the aisles and take what they need. This model reduces food waste and allows shoppers to meet their individual health needs.
