GPS speaker to discuss college transition and accommodations for students with learning differences

On Wednesday, Dec. 11, the GPS Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will host learning disabilities specialist Elizabeth Hamblet in a presentation titled “Seven Steps to College Success: A Pathway for Students with Disabilities” at noon and 7 p.m. via Zoom.

The family of a student with a disability who has an individualized education plan or 504 plan may have questions about what happens for the student when they go to college. In addition to the increase in academic demands, some of the supports received in high school may not be available. However, research shows the proper preparation can create a smooth transition to college when the planning is rooted in a thorough understanding of the changes students will encounter in their new environment.

Hamblet will discuss how students can access accommodations and what documentation they may need to request them; what key personal and academic skills are needed for self-management at college; how students can find schools that are a good fit; and what admissions directors want applicants to know about the application process.

She has worked both ends of the college transition, first as a high school special education teacher and then as a college learning disabilities specialist at Simmons College, Rutgers University. Currently, she teaches strategies to undergraduate and graduate students at Columbia University.

Hamblet also is a contributing writer for Disability Compliance for Higher Education. She is the author of “7 Steps for Success: High School to College Transition Strategies for Students with Disabilities” and “Transitioning to College – A Guide for Students with Disabilities.”

Continuing professional development units are available for this program.
