Feeling blue? Elgin church to host special service Dec. 15

Are you dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce, coping with loss of a job, living with cancer or some other disease that puts a question mark over the future?

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin invites the community to its “Blue Christmas” service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15. Join in this service of prayer, song, and silence.

Blue Christmas services in churches emerged in the United States in the early 1990s. The timing coincides with the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, which can be a poignant time for reflection and remembrance. Some churches also connect the service to the story of Saint Thomas, who struggled to believe in the resurrection of Jesus, mirroring the struggles of those who are grieving.

While not a traditional part of church worship, Blue Christmas services have become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to address the emotional complexities of the holiday season.

The church is at 357 Division St. in downtown Elgin. All are welcome. For details, visit holytrinityelgin.com or facebook.com/HolyTrinityElgin/.
