For the 50th year, Aurora women’s homemade sweets highlight church fundraiser
About 400 homemade buttermints came out of an Aurora oven recently for the 19th annual cookie and candy sale at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora.
The sweets, in pink, green, yellow and white hues for the holidays, are an annual highlight of a sale sponsored by the church’s United Women in Faith chapter, a service group.
Emmy Lou John, chapter president, said she and Mari Curless, another Wesley member, produced the mints in about four hours. This is the 50th year the duo has produced the sweets.
In addition to the mints, $2 for a plate of 22, other offerings are prepacked boxes of 20 cookies for $11, a half-pound bag of peanut brittle for $4, a bag of bean-soup mix for $3.50 and three rosettes for $2.
The sale is underway with orders being accepted online at givebutter.com/2024Cookies. Prepayments, required, may also be made by sending an order and check to the church, 14. N. May St. in Aurora, IL, 60506. Orders may be picked up from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 7. No orders will be accepted at the door.
Proceeds will benefit its mission projects. John said the sale’s goal is $1,000 to support United Women in Faith-sponsored programs. Recipes and ingredient lists will be provided.
John added, “I decided to try making the mints after having some at a United Methodist Women's luncheon at Glenn Memorial UMC in Atlanta, Ga. I brought the recipe home from Atlanta along with the molds.”
According to John, the Wesley sale had been held in-person for 15 years until the COVID pandemic forced the event online in 2021. She recalled, “We went online and sold out quickly.”
