GPS author to speak on encouraging autonomy while maintaining boundaries

The GPS Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will present “Balanced & Steady Parenting: Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Independent Kids” with psychologist and author Emily Edlynn.

This event will be presented at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4. There will be a hybrid in-person and Zoom webinar in the Silverleaf Room at the Culinary and Hospitality Center at College of DuPage at noon Dec. 4 and a second event via Zoom at 7 p.m. Dec. 4. Go to gpsparentseries.org for information and the links to these webinars.

All families want to raise thoughtful, happy children who grow into respectful, independent, thriving adults. When we see young people struggling, it’s natural to want to step in and problem-solve. However, the more controlling adults are, the more out of control young people feel.

Edlynn will discuss how to shift the approach to support and encourage children’s confidence and autonomy while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Edlynn will present a science-based, yet flexible, parenting framework: Autonomy-Supportive Parenting. Her approach benefits children and supports greater overall success in adulthood while also helping to deepen parent-child relationships.

Edlynn will discuss how to nurture fundamental human needs. She also will cover key areas of family life, such as: social skills, digital citizenship, emotional well-being and managing money to name a few.

Edlynn completed her doctoral degree at Loyola University Chicago, specializing in clinical psychology for children and adolescents and later shifted to private practice and freelance writing. She hosts a blog and podcast focused on science-based guidance and has been featured in several national media outlets. She is the author of “Autonomy-Supportive Parenting: Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Children.”

Continuing professional development units are available for this program.
