What doesn’t count

After the dust had settled from the presidential election, I was driving past an elementary school in Arlington Heights and across the entrance to school was the phrase “CHARACTER COUNTS,” which greets all who enter the school.

I thought of this phrase and the character of the two candidates and concluded it does not count in the person the country wishes to be its next president. I also wonder what discussion parents might have with their children to explain this contradiction in what should count but does not seem to count in our election. Perhaps it only applies to the children and no one else.
