Bicyclist critically injured in crash near Libertyville

Authorities are investigating a car-versus-bicycle Saturday near Libertyville that left a man critically injured.

The crash occurred about midday Saturday at the intersection of West Rockland Road and the Des Plaines River pedestrian/bicycle trail, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responding to the crash arrived to find a 33-year-old Mundelein man critically injured. He was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist was traveling northbound on the trail when he attempted to cross West Rockland Road and was struck by a westbound Toyota Prius driven by a 39-year-old Gurnee man, sheriff’s police said.

The impact appears to have thrown the bicyclist onto the vehicle’s front windshield before he fell to the ground, officials said.

The driver of the Toyota, as well as a child passenger, were not injured.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is investigating.
