Association for Individual Development to host program on Native American culture

Association for Individual Development is celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a presentation and question session by Sonia Richardson (Sitting Pretty Woman), an AID supervised manager, on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The community is invited to this program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the AID administration building, 309 New Indian Trail Court in Aurora. Admission and parking are free.

The event is hosted by AID's Cultural Competency and Diversity Committee. During November, Richardson is sharing traditional recipes, showcasing artifacts and explaining the significance of cultural items.

Native American American Heritage Month, observed during November in the U.S., is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

It’s a time to celebrate the resilience, diversity, and achievements of Native American tribes and communities, while also acknowledging their struggles including displacement, cultural suppression and inequality.

The month highlights traditions, art, music, dance, language, and stories that are integral to Indigenous identity. It also brings awareness to historical and ongoing issues impacting Native communities, such as land rights, cultural preservation, and social justice. Institutions, including schools, museums and governments host events, educational programs, and exhibits to honor Indigenous culture and support greater understanding and respect for Native American heritage.
