Lottery for ballot positions in Aurora’s spring election set for Nov. 6

As of last week's closing of the filing period, 25 candidates are running for the positions of mayor and aldermen for the City of Aurora.

The lottery to determine the ballot order of candidates who simultaneously filed petitions to run in the 2025 Consolidated General Election will occur at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

"Our goal is to conduct the lottery in a transparent, accessible, and fair manner,” said Aurora City Clerk Jennifer Stallings. “We invite all interested parties to attend in person, and we will also livestream the process for those who wish to watch online.”

The lottery will be held at Aurora City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place, in the city council chambers, and will be live-streamed on the City of Aurora’s YouTube channel.

Petitions are considered simultaneously filed if they were received by the city clerk’s office at 8 a.m. on the first day of the filing period or at 4 p.m. on the final day.

Any petitions submitted after 8 a.m. on Oct. 21 and before 4 p.m. on Oct. 28 will appear in the order they were received.

The following candidates waiting in line at or before 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, will be placed into a lottery to determine who will appear first on the ballot:

There were no simultaneous filings on the final hour on the final day.

Six candidates are running for mayor; three candidates are running for alderman-at-large; four candidates are running to fill the unexpired term of alderman in Ward 1; two candidates are running for alderman in Ward 2; three candidates are running for alderman in Ward 4; four candidates are running for alderman in Ward 7; two candidates are running for alderman in Ward 9. The incumbent in Ward 10 is running unopposed.

The state of Illinois requires the local election authority to conduct a lottery within nine days after the last day of the petition filing period.
