Due diligence key to energy contract

I’m writing in response to Don DeWitte’s October opinion piece in favor of St. Charles signing an early renewal to their energy contract with IMEA. His column summarized what IMEA explained to residents at a council meeting a few months ago.

Residents are not asking the city to reject the contract with IMEA, but we are asking the city to not sign now, which is five years before the contract renewal date. In addition, we are asking them to get several competitive bids and to evaluate all of the bids and then sign the best contract for us. It may or may not be IMEA’s bid.

No one today is critical of then-Alderperson DeWitte or any previous administration for supporting the current 2004 contract with IMEA. We trust the council did their homework at that time just as we are asking them to do it now.

In conclusion, I want to thank our St. Charles alderpeople for delaying a vote on the early renewal until next year and I sincerely hope they will continue to delay it until they can conduct their due diligence on this issue.
