FamilyForward raises nearly $80,000 for low-income families at Giving Hope event

Sunday, Oct. 20, FamilyForward supporters came together for the annual Giving Hope event, raising nearly $80,000 to help low-income, working families across the northwest suburbs. It was the Arlington Heights based organization\'s most successful Giving Hope event ever.

This year’s theme, Giving Hope: There’s No Place Like a Home, featured a delightful “Wizard of Oz” connection in anticipation of the upcoming film release of “Wicked.” Attendees gathered at Cotillion Banquets, Palatine, for food and festivities designed to celebrate and support FamilyForward’s work to equip local parents to build a stronger future for their families.

Giving Hope: There’s No Place Like a Home included a silent auction and raffle; a gourmet lunch buffet featuring a Donut Wall and complimentary mimosas; enchanting musical entertainment by local musician Nate Massa; and a live appeal to raise funds for families. Many participants got into the spirit of the day, adding a bit of whimsy to the event through their “Wizard of Oz” inspired outfits and accessories. “This year’s event was a truly wonderful celebration of our mission. It was a thrill to see so many new faces join in our efforts to assist families, who are so appreciative of our help. We were energized by the passionate and generous outpouring of support exhibited by our attendees,” said Tim Wayman, chair of the FamilyForward board of directors.

One highlight of the event was the inspirational testimony from a single parent who recently completed the intensive two-year family program at FamilyForward. The parent, whose husband had passed away suddenly, shared her deeply moving story of rising above overwhelming challenges as she rebuilt her life and took positive steps toward financial stability for her family. Thanks to the support, accountability and consistent encouragement she received from her volunteer mentors and the professional staff at FamilyForward, the parent was able to find hope and a path forward, toward a better future.

The day also marked a time of transition at FamilyForward. Erica Chianelli, executive director for the past three years, is moving on. Members of the board recognized and thanked Chianelli for her energetic work to enhance community and business relationships, thus expanding the visibility and reach of FamilyForward.

Reflecting on this event and her time at FamilyForward, Chianelli said: “It was truly special to close out my time at FamilyForward with our biggest and most successful Giving Hope event thus far. It has been an honor and privilege to serve alongside so many dedicated people who join in our work to assist families. I’m excited to come back to this event as a guest next year and watch the organization build on this momentum.”

This year’s Giving Hope fundraiser was once again critically important, as client families continue to face struggles only aggravated by uncertain economic conditions and the ever-rising costs of rental housing and child care. “We are deeply grateful to our supporters and partners, who came together to ensure that we not only met our fundraising goal, but exceeded it,” said Wayman.

Serving the northwest suburbs since 2003, FamilyForward works to strengthen and empower low-income, working families by providing rent assistance and mentoring services for up to two years. Its targeted program helps participants learn and put into practice solid financial principles and develop important career-advancement and life skills. Families receive consistent guidance from trained volunteer mentors and professional coaches throughout their time in the program, with the ultimate objective to achieve financial stability and independence.
