Aurora University to celebrate Day of Dead Oct. 29

Aurora University students will celebrate Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) by setting up an altar (ofrenda) displaying memorabilia honoring departed persons at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Phillips Library, 315 S. Gladstone Ave. in Aurora.

AU's Latin American Students Organization is the sponsor. Yalith Ramirez, LASO appropriations, said students have invited university students, faculty and staff to contribute photos to the altar. The public is invited to view the display.

Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is celebrated in Mexico and Central America on Nov. 1-2 to honor departed loved ones with private altars (ofrendas) displaying favorite foods and beverages, as well as photos and memorabilia. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so the souls will hear the prayers and the words of the living directed to them.

Altars are traditionally built on Oct. 30-31 and are taken down Nov. 2.
