Aurora Emergency Management Agency encourages practical giving for disaster relief
Following recent disasters like Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton, and the Wyoming Wildfires, the Aurora Emergency Management Agency urges the public to reconsider sending physical donations.
While well-intended, physical items often create logistical issues, including overstocked warehouses and the inability to store or distribute items efficiently.
“Many disaster areas are overwhelmed with donations they can’t handle,” said Natalie Wiza, Aurora Emergency Management coordinator. “Items that aren’t immediately needed may end up in landfills, adding to the problem rather than solving it.”
How to help most effectively
AEMA recommends monetary donations as the most practical way to support relief efforts. Cash and gift cards allow survivors to get exactly what they need while also boosting the local economy. “Cash donations enable organizations to respond to survivors’ needs as they evolve,” Wiza added.
Other ways to make an impact includes:
• Donating blood: Blood donations are always needed, especially during crises.
• Hosting a fundraiser: Turn your generosity into a monetary donation that supports reputable relief efforts.
· Volunteering: Sign up with trusted organizations to provide hands-on support in affected areas.
For those who still want to donate physical items, AEMA advises contacting emergency management agencies or nonprofits to confirm what is truly needed. Make sure to arrange transportation and ensure donations are packaged appropriately.
Beware of scams
Be cautious when donating. Support well-established organizations and avoid unsolicited emails or requests from unknown groups.
