Coroner plans announcement on old skull found in Batavia home

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell plans to have a news conference Thursday regarding the identity of a person whose skull was found inside a Batavia home in 1978.

The skull was found behind a plaster wall during a remodeling project. At the time, police tried to find out more but were unsuccessful. An anthropologist said the skull and other bones were likely that of a woman in her mid-20s at the time of her death.

In late 2023, Batavia police asked the coroner for help.

The skull was sent to a company that uses forensic genetic genealogy tools and techniques, such as DNA extraction and sequencing, to identify the woman by finding her relatives.
