Girls golf: Buffalo Grove’s Beerheide fires a 67 to take lead at 2A state tournament

Buffalo Grove junior Courtney Beerheide shot a 5-under par 67 on the first day of the Class 2A girls golf state tournament Friday at Hickory Point in Decatur to grab a 3-shot lead heading into Saturday’s final round.

Beerheide shot a 4-under 32 on the front nine with birdies on No. 2, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8. She birdied No. 18 to shoot 1-under on the back with another birdie at No. 10 and her lone bogey at No. 13 on her sizzling round.

Glenbrook North’s Alexis Myers is in second at 70, and three golfers shot a 1-under 71 for third place — Conant freshman Madeline Gutierrez, Barrington sophomore Reese Wallace and Glenbrook North junior Martha Kuwahara.

In the team competition, Glenbrook North has a commanding 16-shot lead over Stevenson in second, and 18 shots ahead of Hinsdale Central in third. Glenbrook North’s 292 total was only four strokes over par.

Stevenson’s 308 included a 74 from sophomore Ava Alimissis. Sophomore Campbell Ray added a 76 and sophomore Victoria Shao shot 77.

Elyssa Abdullah led Hinsdale Central with a 73.

Barrington is just one shot out of the top three with a 311; in addition to Wallace’s 71, senior Praise Shim carded a 78.

St. Charles North is tied for eighth at 341, Downers Grove North shot a 346 for 11th and Naperville North was 12th with a 355.

Boys state

Hinsdale Central took a six-shot lead after the first day of the Class 3A state boys golf tournament Friday at the The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington.

Senior Isaac Schloegel shot a 71 to lead the Red Devils, followed by senior Dru Devata with a 73, Michael Jorski’s 74 and Kevin Wesolowski at 75.

Wheaton Warrenville South totaled a 299 and is tied for second with New Trier. Callan Fahey (73), Charlie Gilligan (74), Timmy Preede (75) and Michael Johansen (77) posted the Tigers’ four counting scores.

Other locals included Barrington in sixth at 308, Libertyville one shot back at 309 and Geneva right behind at 310.

Individually, Evanston’s Kieran Low shot a 70 to take a 1-shot lead over three golfers including Geneva junior Matt Trimble whose round included an eagle on the 518-yard par 5 ninth.

Libertyville’s Ryan Andrews is only two shots out of the lead at 72; he had five birdies on his round. His teammate Quincy Adams also is in the mix at 73, the same score as Barrington’s William Lange.

Marmion senior Regan Konen is in the mix to defend his Class 2A state championship after shooting an even-par 71 on Friday at the Weibring course in Normal.

The Marquette-bound Konen is chasing a couple local golfers from Wheaton Academy, freshman Ben Patel and sophomore Owen Coniaris who both shot 2-under 69s. Patel had six birdies on his round; Coniaris birdied four of the first five holes.

Lakes sophomore Brady Cross and St. Viator’s Ryan Kalaway are part of a group tied for 10th with 73s.

Marmion also is in contention in the team standings, fifth at 314 but only three shots behind second-place Nazareth’s 311. Ottawa leads the tournament with a 298. Marmion senior Evan Pagnelis shot a 76.

Burlington Central is in sixth place one shot behind Marmion. Senior Matthew Kowalik led the Rockets with a 76 followed by Ben Chesney’s 79, and Tyler Samaan and Cam Sarallo both at 80.

At the Class 1A tournament at Prairie Vista in Bloomington, Timothy Christian sophomore Miles Van Prooyen is in seventh with a 75, five shots out of the lead.
